In 2001 one of the biggest displaced people camps in northern Uganda was established in Kalongo, with a population of 45.000 persons coming from insecure areas. In this camp, and in Agago County in general, more than anywhere else, poverty, congestion and promiscuity have caused the social degradation described above.

progetti emergenzaFor these reasons Kalongo has been chosen as the right location where to establish a social and vocational training centre for helping girls in particularly difficult situations.

This center will be able to host 220 boarders. The rehabilitation of the premises, an old dilapidated school belonging to the Diocese of Gulu, has been done directly by the Programme with local manpower and the supervision of an Italian engineer.
All the furniture has been made by local workshop runned by missionaries.

As mentioned above, the total cost of the rehabilitation, furniture and equipment is 350.000 euros. Part of these costs, about 100.000 euros, has been covered by private donors together with some of the management costs for the next two school years.

progetti emergenzaThe management of the center will be entrusted to the Congregation of the Little Sisters of Mary Immaculate of Gulu, already active in Kalongo in the field of education through their participation in our sponsorship project
This Congregation has a long lasting experience in humanitarian aid towards displaced people with whom they share language and culture.

Description of the center and available courses :

The area of the campus is 10.000 square metres.
The built area is of about 1.500 square metres with 9 buildings which include:

  • the administration block and the teachers room;
  • the conference center and the guest rooms;
  • the class-rooms and the laboratories;
  • the stores;
  • the refectory / restaurant and the kitchens;
  • the students hostel with a reading room;
  • the director’s residence;
  • the amphitheatre for social and cultural events;
  • the services.

Water supply, at the range of 12.000 liters per day, is ensured by a bore hole motorized with a solar pump and by 6 additional tanks collecting rain water having a toal capacity of 35.000 liters.
A second borehole equipped with a manual pump will be drilled as a back-up to the system.
Electricity for running the school equipment is is supplied by a 22 kv silenced generator. An additional solar system will provide power at night.

progetti emergenza The one-two- or three years courses offered are:

  • Tayloring
  • Weaving and Dyeing
  • Catering
  • Computer literacy
  • Secretariat

The center will also offer:

  • Adult literacy courses for non-resident women and girls.
  • Counseling and psycho social support.
  • Mental Health services.

Considering the extreme poverty of the selected students, boarding and education will be free of charge for the first two years.However, for reasons of sustainability, whatever will be produced by the students will be marketed. Similarly, the income deriving from the restaurant will also contribute to cover part of the running costs.
It is hoped that with restoration of peace, the economical level of the people will rise and it will be possible to charge fees.
