In
2001 one of the biggest displaced people camps in northern
Uganda was established in Kalongo, with a population of
45.000 persons coming from insecure areas. In this camp,
and in Agago County in general, more than anywhere else,
poverty, congestion and promiscuity have caused the social
degradation described above.
For
these reasons Kalongo has been chosen as the right location
where to establish a social and vocational training centre
for helping girls in particularly difficult situations.
This center will be able to host 220 boarders. The rehabilitation
of the premises, an old dilapidated school belonging to
the Diocese of Gulu, has been done directly by the Programme
with local manpower and the supervision of an Italian engineer.
All the furniture has been made by local workshop runned
by missionaries.
As
mentioned above, the total cost of the rehabilitation, furniture
and equipment is 350.000 euros. Part of these costs, about
100.000 euros, has been covered by private donors together
with some of the management costs for the next two school
years.
The
management of the center will be entrusted to the Congregation
of the Little Sisters of Mary Immaculate of Gulu, already
active in Kalongo in the field of education through their
participation in our sponsorship project
This Congregation has a long lasting experience in humanitarian
aid towards displaced people with whom they share language
and culture.
